Representative Francis Thompson
Francis Coleman Thompson, born on October 29, 1941, is a prominent figure in Louisiana politics. He hails from Delhi in Richland Parish, Louisiana. Thompson started his political career when he was elected to the Richland Parish School Board in 1968.
In 1975, Thompson won a special election for District 19 in the Louisiana House. Since then, he has been re-elected 11 times, demonstrating his popularity and effectiveness as a representative. His tenure in the Louisiana House of Representatives lasted from 1975 to 2007. However, due to newly enacted term limits, Thompson was forced to run for State Senate in 2007.
Thompson served as a Democratic member of the Louisiana State Senate, representing District 34 from 2008 to 2020. On March 17, 2023, Thompson announced he was leaving the Democratic Party and would register as a Republican.
Thompson assumed office as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, representing District 19, on January 13, 2020. His current term ends on January 10, 2028. He won re-election to the Louisiana House of Representatives to represent District 19 outright in the primary on October 14, 2023, after the general election was canceled.
In terms of education, Thompson earned his B.S. and M.S. from Louisiana Technical University, and his M.Ed and Ed.D from Northeast Louisiana University. His professional experience includes working as a teacher, Vice President of a manufacturing company, Assistant Professor for the Louisiana Department of Education, and Assistant Professor at Northeast Louisiana University.
