Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Sylvia Taylor now resides in LaPlace, Louisiana. She completed her high school education at Fifth Ward High School. Following this, she pursued higher education at Dillard University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree. She later obtained a J.D. from Loyola Law School in 1974.

Before her political career, Sylvia Taylor had a distinguished career in law. She worked as an attorney with New Orleans Legal Assistance Corporation and served as the executive director of Capital Area Legal Services in Baton Rouge. She also worked as a mediator for the State of Louisiana and served as a workers compensation judge in Jefferson, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines Parishes.

In the 2023 elections, Sylvia Taylor ran for election to the Louisiana House of Representatives to represent District 57. She emerged victorious in the general election held on November 18, 2023. This victory was significant as it marked her as the first woman and the first Black woman to represent District 57.

Throughout her career, Sylvia Taylor has been a trailblazer. She was the first female attorney in St. John the Baptist Parish, laying the foundation for a career dedicated to justice and advocacy. Her electoral victory further extends her legacy as a pioneer in her field.
