Reckitt continued her studies at Boston University, obtaining a Master of Arts in Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography in 1968.

Reckitt’s professional journey was deeply intertwined with her advocacy work. She was a prominent feminist and activist, known as one of the most influential advocates in Maine for abused women. Her career included roles such as the executive director of Family Crisis Services in Portland, Maine, for over three decades. She also served as the executive vice president of the National Organization for Women (NOW) in Washington, D.C., from 1984 to 1987.

In addition to her work with NOW, Reckitt co-founded the Human Rights Campaign Fund, the Maine Coalition for Human Rights, the Maine Women’s Lobby, and the first Maine chapter of NOW. Her contributions to the community were recognized when she was inducted into the Maine Women’s Hall of Fame in 1998.

Reckitt’s legislative work in the Maine House of Representatives included serving on the Judiciary Committee. She was known for her commitment to criminal justice and public safety, which were reflected in her committee assignments throughout her tenure.
