Ben Barnes, born on March 30, 1975, and affiliated with the Democratic Party, is an American politician serving as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, representing District 21. He assumed office on January 10, 2007.

Benjamin Scott Barnes, commonly known as Ben Barnes, was born on March 30, 1975, in Peoria, Illinois. He attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Maryland, and later went on to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he earned a B.A. in Economics and Political Science in 1998.

After his graduation, Barnes worked as a Field Coordinator in the Development Department for People for the American Way from 1999 to 2000. He then decided to pursue law and enrolled at the University of Baltimore School of Law, earning his J.D. in 2003. He was admitted to the Maryland Bar in 2004.

Before his political career, Barnes served as a legislative aide to the Maryland Senate President from 2000 to 2004. He also worked as a law clerk to Judge James J. Lombardi of the Prince George’s County Circuit Court, 7th Judicial Circuit, from 2004 to 2005. He then practiced law at the Law Offices of Donna L. Crary, P.A., from 2005 to 2011.

Barnes’ political career began when he was elected to the Maryland House of Delegates in 2006, representing District 21, which serves Anne Arundel and Prince George’s counties. He has been reelected in 2010, 2014, and 2018. During his tenure, he has served as a Chief Deputy Majority Whip in the House of Delegates and is currently Chair of the House.

In the House of Delegates, Barnes has held several key positions. He has been a member of the Judiciary Committee, Economic Matters Committee, and Appropriations Committee. He has also served as the Chair of the Oversight Committee on Pensions, Education & Economic Development Subcommittee, and Capital Budget Subcommittee.

Barnes is currently an attorney at the Law Office of Hall Butler MacCleay and Maloney in Bowie. He continues to serve his constituents with dedication and commitment.
