Charlotte Crutchfield is an American politician from Maryland. She is a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates who currently represents Maryland House of Delegates District 19 in Montgomery County.

Charlotte Crutchfield is an American politician from Maryland. She is a Democratic member of the Maryland House of Delegates who currently represents Maryland House of Delegates District 19 in Montgomery County.

Born on December 8, 1963, in Chicago, Illinois, Crutchfield attended Howard University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1986. She then attended the Boston College School of Law, earning a Juris Doctor in 1989.

Crutchfield served as an assistant state’s attorney for Montgomery County from 1991 to 1992. She also served as an associate general counsel at Gulfstream Aerospace from 1996 to 2002. Currently, Crutchfield is a practicing attorney in the area of employment law.

Crutchfield first ran for the House of Delegates in 2014, coming in fourth place with 15.7 percent of the vote. She expressed a “very strong interest” in running again in 2018, eventually filing to run on January 10, 2018. She came in second place in the Democratic primary election, receiving 17.6 percent of the vote.

Charlotte Crutchfield was sworn into the Maryland House of Delegates on January 9, 2019. She, along with Jheanelle Wilkins and Pamela Queen, became the first Black women elected to represent Montgomery County in the House of Delegates.

On May 20, 2020, Crutchfield wrote a letter to Governor Larry Hogan urging him to grant clemency to Eraina Pretty, the longest-serving female prisoner in Maryland, after she tested positive for COVID-19. A Baltimore circuit judge granted the release of Pretty on December 14, 2020.

Crutchfield is a member of several committees and memberships including the Judiciary Committee, Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland, Maryland Legislative Transit Caucus, Maryland Veterans Caucus, Women Legislators of Maryland, and Maryland Legislative Latino Caucus.

Charlotte is the mother of a daughter, who recently graduated from college and a high school age son. Charlotte is a military widow. Her husband served as an officer in the United States Public Health Service. Charlotte’s family has lived in Montgomery County for over 100 years and she has lived in District 19 for over 15 years.
