Born on April 3, 1951 in Denver, Colorado, Susan K. McComas is a dedicated public servant and a member of the Republican Party. She has been serving as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 2002. Initially, she represented District 35B from 2003 to 2015, and then she has been representing District 34B since 2015.

Education

Susan McComas attended Cheyenne Central High School in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She later pursued her higher education at The Johns Hopkins University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences in 1974. She also studied at the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs. Susan earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Wyoming College of Law in 1980. Following her graduation, she was admitted to the Wyoming Bar and the Maryland Bar.

Career

Susan McComas has had a diverse career. She has worked as an attorney in private practice since her graduation from the University of Wyoming. She briefly worked in the Law Offices of Bruce J. Gilbert from 1984 to 1985. She was also a member of the board of directors of the Sexual Assault/Spouse Abuse Resource Center from 1982 to 1989.

Her political career began as a file clerk for the Wyoming House of Representatives. She then worked as a legal intern for the Wyoming Department of Health and for Albany County, Wyoming, and as a researcher for the National Organization of Social Security Claimants’ Representatives. From 1983 to 1985, she worked as a commissioner for the Harford County District Court.

Susan McComas served on the Bel Air Town Commission from 1987 to 2002, and thrice served as the town’s mayor. She has been a member of the Maryland House of Delegates since 2002, first representing District 35B from 2003 to 2015 and then District 34B since 2015.

Achievements and Memberships

Susan McComas has held several key positions during her tenure. She served as the Deputy Minority Whip from 2015-18, and again from 2023 onwards. She has been a member of various committees including the Appropriations Committee, the Joint Committee on Administrative, Executive and Legislative Review, and the Joint Committee on Legislative Ethics.

She was the House Chair of the Harford County Delegation in 2008-09 and has been a member of the Maryland Rural Caucus since 2003 and the Maryland Veterans Caucus since 2006. She served as the President of Women Legislators of Maryland from 2015-16.

Personal Life

Susan McComas is married to Charles McComas III. They have been together since 1979.
