Representative Alan Silvia
Alan Silvia is a member of the Democratic Party and represents the 7th Bristol District in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He has been serving in this role since 2013.
Born on October 11, 1951, in Fall River, Massachusetts, Silvia is a life-long resident of the city. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam Conflict and received an Honorable Discharge.
Silvia pursued higher education after his military service, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Northeastern University and a Master of Science degree from Salve Regina University.
His career in law enforcement spans over two decades, including twenty-one years of service as a detective with the Fall River Police Department. During his tenure, he was involved in the investigation of major crimes, including rape, robbery, embezzlement, and homicide. He also served several years in the Sexual Abuse Unit, where he investigated crimes of violence against children.
In addition to his law enforcement career, Silvia has been active in community service. He has served on the City of Fall River Planning Board and the South End Neighborhood Association. He has also been a board member of the Child Protection Council and Citizens for Citizens, and a member of the Greater Fall River Alcoholism Council and the Greater New Bedford Coalition of Domestic Violence.
Before his election to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Silvia challenged incumbent State Representative Kevin Aguiar in the Democratic primary in 2010 and 2012. After a close race and a recount in 2012, Silvia was declared the winner. Since then, he has been re-elected multiple times, often running unopposed.
In his personal life, Silvia is a retired Fall River Police Officer and has one child, three grandchildren, and a pet. His career highlights include serving as a USMC, Viet Nam Era Veteran, Fall River Police Dept. Major Crimes Detective, Vice President Seven Hills Foundation Inc., Executive Director PYCO, Inc., and a Small Business Owner.
