Senator Ashlei Spivey

Ashlei Spivey is a member of the Democratic Party serving in the Nebraska State Senate, representing District 13. She assumed office on January 8, 2025, and her current term is set to end on January 3, 2029.

Born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, Ashlei Spivey has dedicated her life to advocating for her community and addressing systemic challenges. She graduated from Omaha North High Magnet School in 2004 and pursued higher education at Jackson State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in communications and marketing. She furthered her studies with a graduate degree in urban social planning from the University of Texas at Arlington.

Before entering politics, Spivey built a diverse career that showcased her leadership and commitment to social change. She worked as a nonprofit executive director, focusing on economic development and public health initiatives. Her professional journey also included roles as a restaurant owner, bank vice president, and nonprofit program officer. These experiences equipped her with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by individuals and businesses in her district.

Spivey is also a passionate advocate for maternal and child health, founding the nonprofit organization “I Be Black Girl,” which aims to improve outcomes for women and children in underserved communities. Her dedication to equity and innovation has earned her numerous accolades, including the USA Today 2024 Nebraska Woman of the Year award, the 2023 J.M. Kaplan Innovation Prize, and the 2022 Nebraska Public Health Defender Award from the UNMC College of Public Health.

In her role as a state senator, Spivey is committed to advancing policies that promote affordable housing, quality education, accessible healthcare, and economic justice. She is a strong proponent of reducing the tax burden on working families while ensuring robust funding for schools, infrastructure, and community programs. Her legislative priorities also include addressing environmental challenges and creating opportunities for good-paying jobs within her district.
