Representative Gerri Cannon
Gerri Cannon is an American politician who has made significant contributions to the political landscape of New Hampshire. She was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives in 2018, representing the Strafford 18th District as a member of the Democratic Party. Prior to her tenure in the House of Representatives, she was elected to the Somersworth, New Hampshire School Board in 2017.
Cannon is a trailblazer in many ways. Notably, she is a transgender woman and has been a vocal advocate for transgender rights. Her election to the state legislature alongside Lisa Bunker marked a historic moment as they became the state’s first openly transgender state legislators.
In terms of her electoral history, Cannon has had a successful run. In the 2018 New Hampshire House of Representatives Strafford 18th district Democratic primary, she secured 24.81% of the votes. In the general election, she received 17.74% of the votes. Her success continued in the 2020 elections where she received 32.62% of the votes in the Democratic primary and 18.20% in the general election. In the 2022 elections, she moved to the Strafford 12th district and received 25.82% of the votes in the Democratic primary and 14.49% in the general election.
Beyond her political career, Cannon has a diverse professional background. She has worked as a Computer Industry Professional at Digital, Compaq, and Hewlett Packard for 31 years. She also owned and operated a carpentry business, Cannon’s Carpenter on Call, for 10 years and worked as a Professional Long-Haul Truck driver at Swift Transportation and Conway Truckload for 5 years.
Cannon was born in Sudbury, Massachusetts, and currently resides in Somersworth, New Hampshire. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Business/Marketing from Southern New Hampshire University. Throughout her career, she has been a visible Transgender advocate in the State of New Hampshire, speaking with schools, churches, and businesses for over 20 years about what it means to be a Transgender person in our society.
