Representative James Gruber

James Gruber is a Democratic member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives, representing Cheshire District 16. He assumed office on December 4, 2024, and his current term is set to end on December 2, 2026.

James Gruber has dedicated his career to public service and sustainable development. He moved to Alstead, New Hampshire, in 1978, drawn by the strong sense of community and quality of life. Over the years, he has worked in various capacities, including local government management, environmental policy consulting, and academia. He served as a professor and Chair of the Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch University in Keene, where he focused on empowering communities through sustainable practices.

Gruber’s academic background is extensive and diverse. He holds a degree in Civil Engineering from San Diego State University, a Master of Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, a Master of Public Administration from Harvard Kennedy School, and a PhD in Environmental Conservation from the University of Zagreb. His expertise has been instrumental in developing local climate action plans, waste management systems, and participatory community planning sessions across New Hampshire and Vermont.

In addition to his professional achievements, Gruber is deeply committed to preserving New Hampshire’s democratic traditions and environmental sustainability. He has been actively involved in initiatives such as the City of Keene Bike & Pathways system and the replacement of waste incinerators with integrated waste management systems. His legislative priorities include addressing real problems through collaborative efforts and building a better future for all residents of New Hampshire.

Gruber lives on a homestead in Alstead with his wife, where they maintain vegetable gardens, a sugar house, and a small vineyard. They have two grown children. His personal and professional life reflects his dedication to fostering a healthy, sustainable, and inclusive community for future generations.
