Representative Walt Stapleton
Walter A. Stapleton, born in 1947, is a dedicated and experienced politician from New Hampshire. He is a member of the Republican Party and currently serves in the New Hampshire House of Representatives.
Stapleton’s journey began in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he grew up before moving to Milford, Connecticut. He attended Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut. In 1964, he enlisted in the United States Army Transportation Corps with the 729th Railroad Battalion, marking the start of his service to the country.
In 1968, Stapleton married Claire Lois Fontaine. They raised three sons, Ralph, Patrick, and Gregory, in Barryville, New York. During this time, Stapleton worked on the New Haven Railroad and then the Erie Lackawanna Railroad as a Station Agent and then as a Railroad Police officer.
In 1983, Stapleton moved to Claremont, New Hampshire, where he currently resides. He served as the General Manager of Claremont and Concord Railroad. In 1986, he started a railroad consulting business and also became a licensed commercial insurance broker in 2001. He retired in 2017.
Stapleton’s political career began in earnest in 2016 when he ran for a seat in the New Hampshire House of Representatives representing the Sullivan 10 district. Although he was defeated, he was elected as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in 2016. In 2018, he was elected to the New Hampshire House of Representatives where he represents the Sullivan 5 district. He assumed office on December 5, 2018.
Stapleton is known for his conservative views. He is anti-abortion and opposes same-sex marriage. He has been instrumental in updating the state Republican platform to protect the personhood of preborn life in the womb and uphold traditional man-woman marriage.
Apart from his political career, Stapleton is actively involved in his local community. He is a member of the Claremont City Amtrak Passenger Ad Hoc Committee and helped create the Station Host Association of Claremont to meet Amtrak trains, help and greet passengers, and promote the local rail station for increased ridership.
Stapleton and his wife Claire are long-time members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Claremont. He serves as the Financial Secretary and Culture of Life Director of the local Knights of Columbus Council 1820, and also serves the K of C Fourth Degree Assembly 635 as its Faithful Scribe. He is a lifetime member of the American Legion Claremont Post 29.
In his free time, Stapleton enjoys family, travel, gardening, motorcycle riding, bicycling, canoeing, fishing, trail hiking, and hunting.
