Senator Benjie Wimberly

Benjie Wimberly is a member of the Democratic Party and currently serves in the New Jersey State Senate, representing District 35. He assumed office on January 30, 2025, and his current term will conclude on January 11, 2028.

Wimberly won his seat in a special election held on November 4, 2025, succeeding Nellie Pou, after having previously served in the New Jersey General Assembly for over a decade.

Born on December 1, 1964, in Paterson, New Jersey, Wimberly has deep roots in his community and a long history of public service. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia State University and pursued a career in education, working as a special education teacher. Beyond the classroom, he became a mentor and coach, leading varsity baseball and football teams and later serving as the head football coach at Paterson Catholic High School and Hackensack High School. His leadership in athletics brought multiple state and league championships, and his work as Director of the Paterson Division of Recreation further demonstrated his commitment to youth development and community engagement.

Wimberly’s political career began with his election to the New Jersey General Assembly in 2011, where he represented District 35 until 2025. During his tenure in the Assembly, he was appointed Speaker Pro Tempore and served as Vice Chair of the Budget Committee, roles that allowed him to influence fiscal policy and legislative priorities. His legislative work often focused on issues such as education, recreation, and community development, reflecting his professional background and personal dedication to improving opportunities for young people and families in New Jersey.

In addition to his legislative responsibilities, Wimberly has been active in statewide organizations, including serving on the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). His involvement in sports and education has consistently informed his approach to policymaking, emphasizing the importance of mentorship, discipline, and opportunity.
