Senator Benjie Wimberly

Benjie Wimberly is a Democratic Party member serving in the New Jersey State Senate, representing District 35. He assumed office on January 30, 2025, and his current term is set to end on January 11, 2028.

Born and raised in Paterson, New Jersey, Wimberly has dedicated much of his life to public service and community development. Before his tenure in the State Senate, he served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2012 to 2025, representing the same district. During his time in the Assembly, he held significant roles, including Speaker Pro Tempore and Vice Chair of the Budget Committee. His legislative work often focused on education, housing, and economic justice, reflecting his commitment to improving the lives of his constituents.

Wimberly’s professional background is as diverse as it is impactful. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from Virginia State University and has worked as a special education teacher. His passion for youth development extended beyond the classroom, as he also served as the Director of the Paterson Division of Recreation. In this role, he played a pivotal part in organizing community programs and fostering opportunities for young people.

In addition to his educational and legislative contributions, Wimberly has a storied career in sports coaching. He was the head football coach at Paterson Catholic High School, where he led the team to multiple state championships. Later, he took on the role of head coach at Hackensack High School, continuing his legacy of mentorship and athletic excellence.

Wimberly’s dedication to his community is further exemplified by his tenure as a Paterson City Councilman from 2010 to 2012. His ability to connect with residents and address their concerns has made him a respected figure in local and state politics.

Beyond his professional achievements, Wimberly is a family man. He and his wife, Kimberlynn, are proud parents to four sons and grandparents to a grandson. His personal and professional life reflects a deep commitment to service, education, and community empowerment.
