James G. Townsend is a Republican member of the New Mexico State Senate, representing District 34. He assumed office on January 1, 2025, and his current term is set to end on December 31, 2028.

Born and raised in New Mexico, Townsend has deep roots in the state. He attended Carlsbad Senior High School and later pursued higher education at New Mexico State University in Carlsbad. His professional career spans decades in the oil and gas industry, where he worked for companies such as Holly Corporation and its successors. Townsend retired in 2012 as Vice President of HollyFrontier and Senior Vice President of UNEV Pipeline. Even after retiring, he continued to serve on the Board of Directors for Holly Energy Partners.
