Leo Jaramillo, an American politician and member of the Democratic Party, serves in the New Mexico State Senate, representing District 5. He assumed office on January 1, 2021.

Senator Leo Jaramillo, a proud native of the Española Valley and an alumnus of Española Valley High School, has built a career marked by dedication and service. Following high school, he attended the University of New Mexico, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication and Journalism. He also holds a Master of Arts in Education with a focus on Curriculum Design and Instructional Leadership from the College of Santa Fe.

Professional Journey

Leo’s professional path has been both diverse and impactful. Before returning to the Española Valley, he worked as a news writer and producer for KRQE News 13 in Albuquerque and as a middle school teacher in Belen. Since 2003, he has been with Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), holding various roles such as professional staff assistant, communication specialist, training specialist, recruiter, financial analyst, and most recently, Operations Staff Manager.

Volunteerism and Community Service

Guided by a passion for service and ethical leadership, Leo has always been committed to giving back to his community with integrity and compassion. He is excited and honored to run for re-election as your District 5 State Senator, continuing his advocacy for northern New Mexicans.

Political Engagement

Elected in November 2020, Leo assumed office on January 19, 2021. He represents a diverse district encompassing Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval, and Santa Fe Counties. In the New Mexico Senate, he serves as Vice Chairman of the Rules Committee and is a member of the Corporations and Transportation Committee.

Progressive Stance

As a progressive leader, Leo has championed important causes. During the primary campaign, he criticized his opponent’s moderate voting record and strongly advocated for the legalization of recreational marijuana in New Mexico.
