Representative Sam Sutton

Sam Sutton is a member of the Democratic Party and currently serves in the New York State Senate, representing District 22. He assumed office on May 27, 2025, and his current term will conclude on January 1, 2027.

Born Solomon Sutton on August 14, 1949, in New York City, Sutton has had a long career in nonprofit leadership and public service prior to entering politics. He dedicated over three decades to working with Sephardic Bikur Holim, a social service organization that provides assistance to families in need, where he became known for his commitment to community welfare and support programs. His professional background also includes work with the Sephardic Community Federation, the New York Cancer Center, and the Safe Foundation, organizations through which he contributed to healthcare, social services, and community development. Sutton has also served as a trustee of the City University of New York (CUNY) Board of Trustees and the NYU Langone Medical Center, further demonstrating his dedication to education and healthcare.

Sutton entered the political arena when he ran in a special election in May 2025 to succeed Simcha Felder, who resigned after being elected to the New York City Council. Sutton won the election on May 20, 2025, and officially assumed office later that month. His campaign emphasized community safety, combating antisemitism, and strengthening resources for schools and families. Since taking office, Sutton has been active in sponsoring legislation aimed at protecting houses of worship, expanding funding for nonpublic school safety equipment, and addressing issues of racial and religious bias. His legislative work reflects his long-standing commitment to safeguarding vulnerable communities and promoting equity across New York City.

As a senator, Sutton serves as Chairman of the Committee on Administrative Regulations Review Commission (ARRC), where he plays a key role in overseeing regulatory practices and ensuring accountability in state governance.
