Representative Garland Pierce
Garland Edward Pierce, born on July 9, 1953, is a Democratic member of the North Carolina House of Representatives. He has been representing the state’s 48th district, which includes constituents in Hoke and Scotland counties, since 2005.
Pierce was born in Fayetteville, North Carolina, U.S. He earned a B.S. from Fayetteville State University and a M.Div. from Shaw Divinity School. Before his political career, he served in the United States Army from 1971 to 1974. He is also a Baptist Minister.
During the 2016 legislative session, Pierce was one of 11 Democrats to vote in favor of HB2, the controversial “Bathroom Bill”. Despite the controversy, he was reelected in 2020.
As of the 2020 Census, North Carolina state representatives represented an average of 87,116 residents. After the 2010 Census, each member represented 79,715 residents. Pierce’s current term ends on January 1, 2025, and he is running for re-election to the North Carolina House of Representatives to represent District 48. He is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024.
Over the years, Pierce has served on various committees. In the 2023-2024 session, he was assigned to the following committees: Appropriations Committee, House Appropriations on Justice and Public Safety Committee, Commerce Committee (Vice Chair), Energy and Public Utilities Committee, Families, Children, and Aging Policy Committee (Chair), Health Committee, Insurance Committee, and Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
