Senator Val Applewhite
Val Applewhite is a member of the Democratic Party and currently serves as a State Senator for District 19 in North Carolina. She assumed office on January 1, 2023, and her current term ends on January 1, 2025. She is running for re-election to the North Carolina State Senate to represent District 19 and is on the ballot in the general election on November 5, 2024.
Before her tenure as a State Senator, Applewhite served as a councilwoman for the City of Fayetteville from 2007 to 2011. She is the first African American woman senator elected to represent Cumberland County. Her previous elected position was as a member of the Fayetteville City Council where she served three terms as the District 7 Representative.
In addition to her political career, Applewhite has a background in business administration and political science. She has also worked as a real estate broker. Prior to her career in politics and real estate, Applewhite served in the Air Force for 20 years, retiring honorably. She continued her dedication to the country as a DoD Civilian at the Air Force Pentagon Communications Agency.
As a legislator, Applewhite has been assigned to several committees including the Appropriations on Agriculture, Natural and Economic Resources Committee, Commerce and Insurance Committee, Pensions and Retirement and Aging Committee, and the Senate State and Local Government Committee.
