La’Tasha D. Mayes, a dedicated community leader, was born and raised in West Philadelphia. She moved to Pittsburgh in 1999 to attend college and has been serving the region for the past two decades.

Education: Mayes is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. She furthered her education at the Heinz School of Carnegie Mellon University, earning a Master of Science degree in public policy & management.

Career: Mayes is nationally recognized as a leader in the field of Reproductive Justice, Human Rights, and leadership development for women and girls of color. She is the founder and former president and CEO of New Voices for Reproductive Justice, an organization dedicated to the health and well-being of Black women and girls. For 18 years, Mayes garnered national attention and a statewide reputation as an unwavering advocate for improving the health and well-being of marginalized communities, especially Black women, femmes, girls, and gender-expansive folx.

Political Career: Mayes was elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 2022. She is the first woman to ever represent House District 24 and the first out lesbian to ever serve in the Pennsylvania General Assembly. Her mother, a single mom, Army veteran, and union member, sparked her passion for justice at a young age.

Mayes has served on various committees including Appropriations, Environmental Resources & Energy, and Human Services. She is also the Co-Chair of the PA Black Maternal Health Caucus and the Subcommittee Chair of the Pennsylvania Legislative Black Caucus and LGBTQ Equality Caucus.

Mayes is currently serving the 24th Legislative District. Her dedication to justice and equality is evident in her work and she continues to be a strong voice for her community.
