Senator Gretchen Hau

Gretchen Marie Hau lives in Cayey, Puerto Rico. He was born on June 19 in the town of San Germán. Daughter of Arturo RH Hau III and Evelyn Irizarry. He studied at the Radians School in Cayey and then obtained a bachelor’s degree with honors in Business Administration at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), Cayey Campus. She was secretary of her college graduating class, a member of the English Department’s fraternity of honor, a tutor to freshmen in the same department, and held other student body leadership positions. Later, he obtained a master’s degree in Business Administration and Human Resources Management. He studied Law and graduated with Juris Doctor with honors in 2010. She was admitted to the legal profession by the Supreme Court of Puerto Rico in 2011.

He has dedicated himself to public service and the development of the municipalities where he worked for 20 years with the mayor of Cayey, Hon. Rolando Ortiz Velázquez as executive assistant. It has also been able to address financial, infrastructure and economic development issues of the municipalities. She is the first woman to hold the position of executive director of the Association of Mayors of Puerto Rico for four years (2015-2019) working hand in hand with mayors from all over Puerto Rico. In November 2020, she was elected Senator for the District of Guayama, being the first woman to occupy this position for the Popular Democratic Party. And in 2023, she will become the Representative of District number 29, of the Cayey and Cidra municipalities, being re-elected in the 2024 elections for a new four-year term, and in the same way,the first woman to hold this position.

In the Senate of Puerto Rico, Gretchen M. Hau was president of the Economic Development, Essential Services and Consumer Affairs Commission and the Legal Commission. In addition, he chaired the Ethics Commission and the Joint Commission of the Córdova y Fernós Boarding School, which offers an opportunity to outstanding students from the universities of Puerto Rico to interact with the processes of the United States Congress and the Federal Government.

In the House of Representatives she was president of the Infrastructure and Public Works Commission. Its legislative work has been aimed at protecting the rights of Puerto Rican consumers, promoting the economic development of small and medium-sized businesses throughout Puerto Rico, and ensuring that each citizen has access to essential services, better living conditions and development opportunities.

She is currently the spokesperson for the minority in the Finance Commission, and a member of the Housing and Urban Development Commission and the Permanent Joint Commission for the Review and Reform of the Civil Code of Puerto Rico.
