Representative José Pérez Cordero

José Pérez Cordero is a member of the New Progressive Party and currently serves in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives, representing an at-large district. He assumed office on March 21, 2021, and his current term will conclude on January 2, 2029.

Pérez Cordero, also known by the nickname “Che,” has built his career as both a public servant and an attorney. He earned his law degree from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, which provided him with a strong foundation in legal practice and public policy. His professional background as an attorney has been central to his legislative work, equipping him with expertise in legal interpretation, negotiation, and advocacy.

Before becoming an at-large representative, Pérez Cordero served in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives representing District 18 from 2017 to 2021. During that time, he gained valuable experience in legislative processes and constituent services, focusing on issues that impacted his district directly. His tenure in District 18 concluded when Jessie Cortés Ramos of the Popular Democratic Party succeeded him. Following this, Pérez Cordero transitioned to an at-large role, expanding his legislative responsibilities to represent the entire population of Puerto Rico rather than a single geographic district.

His appointment to the at-large seat in March 2021 came after the resignation of Néstor Alonso Vega, also of the New Progressive Party. Pérez Cordero’s election in November 2024 secured his position for another term, extending his service until 2029. As an at-large representative, he has been tasked with addressing broad issues affecting Puerto Rico, including economic development, public safety, and government transparency.

Throughout his legislative career, Pérez Cordero has emphasized the values of the New Progressive Party, particularly its advocacy for Puerto Rico’s statehood and its commitment to modernizing governance. His legal expertise has allowed him to contribute meaningfully to the drafting and analysis of legislation, while his political experience has positioned him as a key figure within his party.
