George Murrell Smith Jr. (born May 15, 1968) is an American politician and the 61st Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives. Since 2001, he has represented the 67th district of South Carolina, which includes Sumter and Sumter County. Smith’s journey in public service has been marked by dedication and leadership.

Born in Florence, South Carolina, Smith grew up in Sumter and graduated from Wilson Hall in 1986. He then attended Wofford College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Government in 1990. Later, he pursued a legal career, graduating from the University of South Carolina School of Law with a J.D. in 1993.

Smith’s commitment to public service began when he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2000. Over the years, he steadily rose through the ranks, becoming an influential figure within the legislature.
