Representative Hugh Bartels
Hugh M. Bartels is an American politician and a Republican member of the South Dakota House of Representatives. Before entering politics, Bartels received an M.B.A. from the University of South Dakota and worked in the finance sector for 35 years. For the last 20 years of his career, Bartels was the President of Reliabank Dakota before retiring in 2016.
Bartels assumed office on January 10, 2017, and is currently serving his fourth term. His current term ends on January 14, 2025. Throughout his legislative career, Bartels has been actively involved in various committees. He serves on the Committee on Appropriations, the Government Operations and Audit committee, and the Joint Committee on Appropriations. Additionally, Bartels currently chairs the Retirement Laws committee.
In 2023, Bartels was elected as the Speaker of the South Dakota House of Representatives, succeeding Spencer Gosch. As Speaker, he plays a crucial role in shaping legislative priorities and facilitating the legislative process.
