Senator John Benson

John Benson is a member of the Republican Party and currently serves in the Vermont State Senate, representing the Orange District. He assumed office on January 6, 2026, and his current term will conclude on January 6, 2027.

Benson was appointed to the seat by Governor Phil Scott on January 2, 2026, following the resignation of his predecessor, Larry Hart Sr., and began his tenure as a legislator shortly thereafter.

Born and raised in Brookfield, Vermont, Benson pursued his education at Vermont Technical College, graduating in 1973. He later became a licensed engineer in Vermont in 1993, establishing a professional career that spanned decades in civil engineering. Benson worked as a managing partner at the engineering firm DuBois & King, where he oversaw numerous infrastructure projects, including the Bennington Bypass. His expertise and leadership in the field earned him recognition as Vermont’s Engineer of the Year in 2018. He also served as president of the Vermont Society of Engineers and was a member of its board for over ten years, reflecting his long-standing commitment to advancing the engineering profession in the state.

Benson’s transition into politics was a natural extension of his professional dedication to public service and infrastructure development.
