She represents the 4th district, which includes portions of the city of Alexandria and Fairfax County, near Washington, D.C. Herring is a member of the Democratic Party.

She represents the 4th district, which includes portions of the city of Alexandria and Fairfax County, near Washington, D.C. Herring is a member of the Democratic Party.

Political Career:

  • House Majority Leader: In 2020, Herring was elected as the Majority Leader in the Virginia House of Delegates, making her the first woman and the first African-American to hold this position.
  • House Democratic Caucus Chair: Since 2015, she has been the House Democratic Caucus Chair, playing a crucial role in shaping the party’s legislative agenda.
  • Chair of the Virginia Democratic Party: In December 2012, Herring made history by becoming the first African-American to be elected chair of the Democratic Party of Virginia.
  • Minority Leader: After the ouster of Eileen Filler-Corn in 2022, Herring served as the de facto minority leader until Delegate Don Scott was selected for the position in June 2022.
