Early Life and Education
Born on October 7, 1987, in Glendale, California, Irene Shin is the daughter of Korean immigrants. She spent her formative years in Greater Los Angeles. In 2010, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of California, Riverside.
Career
Shin’s career has been marked by her commitment to public service and political engagement. She has actively participated in various Democratic political campaigns, including serving as the finance director for then-Senator Kamala Harris. Additionally, Shin holds the position of executive director at the non-profit organization Virginia Civic Engagement Table. Her work focuses on organizing communities to enhance civic education and engagement across the Commonwealth.
Furthermore, Shin contributes to the Tysons Transportation District Service Advisory Board for Fairfax County, where she plays a vital role in transportation planning and policy decisions.
2021 Election Victory
In 2021, Irene Shin announced her primary campaign against incumbent Delegate Ibraheem Samirah for District 86. Despite challenging a fellow Democrat, Shin garnered support from the Virginia Democratic Party establishment, including multiple state legislators. Her campaign outpaced Samirah’s in fundraising, raising over $100,000 more. In the June primary, she secured victory by a narrow margin of 230 votes. Subsequently, in the general election, Shin defeated Republican Julie Perry with a convincing margin of 65% to 34%.

Shin relocated to Virginia in 2014 and currently resides in Herndon.
