Senator Emily Alvarado

Emily Alvarado is a Democratic member of the Washington State Senate, representing the 34th Legislative District. She assumed office on January 21, 2025, and her current term is set to end in January 2029.

Emily Alvarado has dedicated her career to public service and advocacy, with a strong focus on affordable housing, economic opportunity, and social justice. Before joining the Washington State Senate, she served in the Washington House of Representatives, representing the same district from January 2023 to January 2025. During her tenure in the House, she worked tirelessly to address issues such as housing access, public education, and reproductive justice.

Alvarado’s professional background is rooted in her commitment to community development and equity. She previously held the position of director at the City of Seattle’s Office of Housing, where she spearheaded initiatives to increase affordable housing options and promote equitable development. Her leadership extended to her role as an executive with a national affordable housing nonprofit, where she worked on policies and programs to support underserved communities.

An attorney by training, Alvarado earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Washington School of Law. Her academic journey also includes a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from Scripps College. Beyond her legal expertise, she has experience as a community organizer and has worked with organizations like Planned Parenthood, advocating for reproductive rights and healthcare access.

In the Washington State Senate, Alvarado serves as the Vice Chair of the Housing Committee and is a member of the Labor & Commerce and Transportation committees. Her legislative priorities reflect her deep commitment to creating a more equitable and inclusive society, addressing systemic challenges, and improving the quality of life for her constituents in West Seattle, Vashon Island, White Center, and west Burien.
