Laurie A. Jinkins, born in August 1964, is an American politician, attorney, and public health official from Tacoma, Washington. She serves as a member of the Washington House of Representatives from the 27th district. A Democrat, she has held the position of Speaker of the House since January 2020.

Early Life and Education : Laurie Jinkins made history on January 13, 2020, when she became Washington state’s first woman and first lesbian Speaker of the House. Her journey began in the Midwest, where she earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Later, she obtained her Juris Doctor from Seattle University School of Law (then known as the University of Puget Sound School of Law). Her commitment to lifelong learning led her to complete executive studies at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

Career and Advocacy : Before entering politics, Jinkins worked as a litigator, handling child abuse and neglect cases for the state Attorney General’s Office. Her legal background equipped her with a deep understanding of justice and compassion. She then shifted her focus toward public health, serving as an assistant secretary of health at the state Department of Health. Currently, she holds the position of Senior Advisor at the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department.

Throughout her career, Jinkins has been a tireless advocate for anti-discrimination laws. Her dedication extends beyond legislative chambers; she actively engages with the community to promote fairness and equality. Prior to becoming Speaker, Laurie served on the House Appropriations and Health Care & Wellness committees and chaired the Civil Rights and Judiciary Committee.
