Background and Education: Joe Carey Ellington Jr. was born on May 12, 1959, in Flushing, Queens, New York. His upbringing was shaped by his parents—Loretta Ann DiTucci Ellington and the late Joe C. Ellington. Joe’s thirst for knowledge led him through an impressive educational journey. He attended Guilford College, where he earned his Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. But that wasn’t enough for him; he continued his studies at Duke University, pursuing both a Master of Science (M.S.) and a Ph.D. His intellectual curiosity extended beyond the academic realm, and he eventually earned his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) from Wake Forest University. Completing his medical training, he undertook a residency at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
