Howard Marklein, born on October 3, 1954, is an American politician affiliated with the Republican Party. He has been serving as a member of the Wisconsin State Senate, representing District 17, since January 5, 2015.

State Senator Howard Marklein was first elected to the Wisconsin Legislature in 2010 as a State Representative. After serving two terms in the State Assembly, he was elected to the State Senate in 2014. Howard is currently serving his third term as a State Senator for the 17th Senate District after re-election in 2022.

During his time in the State Assembly, Howard served as the Chair of the Assembly Committee on Ways & Means and the Vice-Chair of the Joint Audit Committee. He has been a member of the powerful budget-writing Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) throughout his tenure in the State Senate. In fact, he was appointed Co-Chair of JFC in 2021 and re-appointed Co-Chair for the 2023-24 session.

In addition to his work on the JFC, Senator Marklein serves on several other committees, including the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Tourism (where he is Vice-Chair), the Joint Committee on Employment Relations (JCOER), the Joint Legislative Audit Committee, and the Joint Legislative Council. He has also been appointed to the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics Authority Board of Directors, the State Fair Park Board of Directors, and the Wisconsin Mississippi River Parkway Commission.

A Lifelong Wisconsinite, Howard was raised on a dairy farm in Spring Green, Wisconsin, along with his four younger siblings. He is married to Peggy, a registered nurse, and together they have two children and three stepchildren, as well as seven grandchildren. Howard graduated from River Valley High School (‘72) and holds a BBA in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (‘76). His professional career included work as a certified public accountant (CPA) and a certified fraud examiner (CFE), with a focus on forensic accounting and white-collar crime investigations.

Senator Marklein is an active member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Spring Green, as well as organizations such as the Knights of Columbus, the Sauk County Farm Bureau, and the National Rifle Association.
