Sylvia Ortiz-Velez is an American real estate broker and Democratic politician hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She currently serves as a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly, representing the 8th Assembly district since 2021. Prior to her role in the State Assembly, she served on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors from 2018 to 2022.

Early Life and Education: Sylvia Ortiz-Velez was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She earned her B.A. in political science from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Before entering politics, she worked as a real estate broker in Milwaukee.

Political Career: In 2012, Ortiz-Velez made her first attempt at election to the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors, challenging the four-term incumbent supervisor Peggy A. West. Although she didn’t succeed in that election, she persisted. In 2018, she ran again and defeated West, securing 57% of the vote. During her time on the County Board, she actively participated in various committees and also served on the Mitchell Park Domes Task Force, advocating for the preservation of the iconic nature conservatory.

In the spring of 2020, when incumbent Assemblymember JoCasta Zamarripa decided not to seek re-election, Ortiz-Velez announced her candidacy for Zamarripa’s assembly seat. She won the primary and has been serving in the Wisconsin State Assembly since January 2021.

Other Involvements: Beyond her political roles, Ortiz-Velez is also on the advisory board of the United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS).
