Sandy Newsome, a dedicated public servant and successful business owner, has made a lasting impact on the state of Wyoming. Born and raised in the picturesque town of Cody, Sandy’s journey has been one of resilience, community engagement, and economic stewardship.

Early Years and Education

Sandy moved to Cody in 1982 after graduating from Colorado State University with a B.S. in Animal Science. Her passion for agriculture and the outdoors led her to a career with the Wyoming Department of Agriculture as a meat inspector serving the Big Horn Basin. This experience gave her firsthand knowledge of the challenges faced by Wyoming’s agricultural community.

Business Ventures and Economic Growth

In 1983, Sandy met her husband, Bob, and they married in 1989. Together, they embarked on a remarkable entrepreneurial journey. Bob had started Sunlight Sports, an outdoor store, in 1971, and Sandy joined him full-time. Over the next three decades, they weathered economic ups and downs, demonstrating their ability to balance budgets, adapt to changing markets, and create jobs. Sandy’s commitment to economic growth and fiscal responsibility would later serve her well in the realm of state politics.

Public Service and Leadership

Sandy’s dedication extended beyond the business world. She was appointed twice by Governor Mead to serve on statewide boards. Notably, she served on the Wyoming Tourism Board from 2011 to 2017, where she held the offices of Vice Chairman and Chairman. Her strategic approach to budget cuts during challenging times demonstrated her commitment to minimizing the impact on Wyoming’s vital tourism industry.

Legislative Experience

In 2019, Sandy was elected as a Republican member of the Wyoming House of Representatives, representing District 24. Her legislative work includes serving on the Transportation, Military, and Highways Committee, as well as the Travel, Recreation, and Wildlife Committee. Sandy’s practical business acumen informs her decisions, ensuring that Wyoming’s economy remains resilient and vibrant.

Community Involvement

Beyond her professional achievements, Sandy is an active member of the Cody community. She has served as Chairman of Forward Cody, an organization focused on business retention and expansion. Her volunteer work with the Park County Travel Council and the Park County Republican Women reflects her commitment to civic engagement.

A Life Well Lived
