About Governor William Moore
WILLIAM MOORE was born in Philadelphia, where he became a merchant. He was appointed to the Committee of Safety in 1776 and was placed on the Board of War in 1777. In 1778 he was elected to Congress but declined to served, preferring instead to be on the Pennsylvania Supreme Executive Council (the state’s executive authority). He won election to the Council and became Vice President, succeeding to the position of President (the equivalent of governor) upon the retirement of Joseph Reed in 1781. He was commissioned a judge of the Court of Errors and Appeals in 1783 and became a member of the state Assembly in 1784. That same year he was elected Director of the Bank of Pennsylvania. Moore served as a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania from 1784 to 1789.
