Adam Bandt is an Australian politician and the leader of the Australian Greens. He has been the Member for Melbourne in the House of Representatives since 2010.

Early life and education

Bandt was born in Adelaide, South Australia on 11 March 1972. He grew up in Perth, Western Australia, and attended Hollywood Senior High School. He then studied law at Murdoch University, graduating in 1996. After graduating, Bandt worked as an industrial and public interest lawyer. He also worked as a student activist and was a member of the Left Alliance.

Political career

In 2004, Bandt joined the Australian Greens. He was elected to the Victorian Greens’ state council in 2005 and to the party’s national council in 2007. In 2008, Bandt was elected co-deputy leader of the Greens, alongside Bob Brown.

In 2010, Bandt was elected to the House of Representatives as the Member for Melbourne. He was the first Green to be elected to the House of Representatives at a federal election. Bandt has been re-elected to the House of Representatives in 2013, 2016, 2019, and 2022.

As a Member of Parliament, Bandt has been a vocal advocate for environmental protection, social justice, and peace. He has been a critic of the Australian government’s policies on climate change, asylum seekers, and Indigenous affairs. Bandt has also been a strong supporter of same-sex marriage and the introduction of a federal ICAC.

In 2020, Bandt was elected leader of the Australian Greens, following the resignation of Richard Di Natale. Bandt is the first leader of the Greens to come from the party’s Left wing.
