Gail Chasey, born on April 1, 1944, is an American politician and a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. She has been representing District 18 since January 1997.

Gail Chasey, born on April 1, 1944, is an American politician and a Democratic member of the New Mexico House of Representatives. She has been representing District 18 since January 1997.

Gail Chasey is married to David L. Norvell, who is a former Attorney General of New Mexico and Speaker of the New Mexico House of Representatives.

In terms of education, Gail Chasey is highly qualified. She earned her master’s degree in special education in 1971, her Ph.D. in special education from the University of New Mexico in 1981, and her J.D. from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2008.

In addition to her political career, Gail Chasey is also a professional attorney. She graduated from the University of New Mexico School of Law in 2008, which she attended while continuing to serve in the Legislature. Upon graduation, Representative Chasey began a second career as an attorney.

Throughout her political career, Gail Chasey has been active in introducing legislation. In 2019, she introduced legislation that would prohibit disenfranchisement of felons. If the bill is successful, New Mexico would become the third state (in addition to Maine and Vermont) to allow felons to vote while serving sentences.

Gail Chasey has also been successful in her election campaigns. For instance, in the 1996 elections, she won the four-way June 4, 1996 Democratic Primary with 964 votes (53.5%) in a field which included later state Senator Daniel Ivey-Soto. She won the three-way November 5, 1996 General election against Green candidate Robert Anderson and Independent candidate Jeff Gittelman.

In her most recent election in 2022, Gail Chasey ran for re-election to the New Mexico House of Representatives to represent District 18. She won in the general election on November 8, 2022. Following this victory, Chasey was elected to serve as House Majority Leader for the 2023-2024 session.

Gail Chasey is currently the longest serving member of the NM House. Her current term ends on December 31, 2024.
