Ann E. Cummings was born on July 20, 1946, in Holliston, Massachusetts. She spent her early years in Wantagh, New York, and Lexington, Kentucky, where she completed her high school education at Lexington Catholic High School. In 1968, she graduated from Cardinal Cushing College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology. Later, in 1989, she earned a Master of Science in Administration from Saint Michael’s College.

After completing her education, Ann Cummings served as a VISTA volunteer in the Pittsburgh area. She then ventured into various business endeavors, eventually establishing herself as a real estate broker. Her professional journey laid a strong foundation for her future political career.

Ann Cummings’ political journey began in Montpelier, Vermont, where she became actively involved in local government. She served on the city and regional planning commissions and was a member of the Montpelier City Council. In 1988, she ran for mayor but was defeated by Arthur J. Goss. However, she persevered and successfully won the mayoral election in 1990, serving until 1996. Her tenure as mayor was marked by her leadership during the 1992 flood that affected downtown Montpelier.

In 1996, Ann Cummings was elected to the Vermont Senate, representing Washington County. She has been re-elected every two years since then, demonstrating her enduring commitment to public service. From 2001 to 2003, she served as the Senate’s majority leader. Over the years, she has been a member of several key committees, including the Finance and Education Committees. She chaired the Finance Committee from 2011 to 2013 and again from 2017 onwards, and the Education Committee from 2015 to 2017.

Ann Cummings is married to Regis E. Cummings, and together they have four children: three daughters and one son. The family resides in Montpelier, Vermont. Ann’s dedication to her community and her family has been a cornerstone of her life and career.
