Nelson Brownell is a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, representing Bennington-1 District. He assumed office on January 9, 2019. His current term ends on January 8, 2025.

Representative Nelson Brownell



Nelson Brownell was born in 1946 in Pownal, Bennington County, Vermont. He was one of eleven children in his family. In the early 1950s, his family moved to Vermont, where he attended elementary and high schools in Bennington.

In the 1960s, Nelson left Vermont for a short period to pursue higher education and start a family. He married his wife, Cindy, and together they have three daughters. In the 1970s, Nelson and his family moved back to Vermont, where they have resided since.

Nelson recently retired after a distinguished 46-year career in the IT field. He worked as the manager of IT operations for Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). His extensive experience in IT has been a significant asset throughout his career.

Nelson has been an active member of his community for over 30 years. He has served in various capacities, including as a member of the Pownal Planning Board, the Pownal Select Board, and as the Pownal Zoning Administrator. Additionally, he has held the position of Justice of the Peace and has been involved in several town committees.

During his tenure on these boards, Nelson played a crucial role in securing funds for several major projects in the Town of Pownal. These projects include the superfund cleanup of the Tannery, the construction of a town wastewater treatment plant and collection system covering three villages, and the conservation of over 3,000 acres of land for public use. He also wrote several major grants for the town, contributing significantly to its development.

Nelson’s dedication to his community has earned him numerous awards. He has been recognized as the Citizen Planner of the Year by both the New England Planning Association and the Vermont Planning Association. Additionally, he received the BCRC Bongartz Community Service Award, among other accolades.

As a member of the Vermont House of Representatives, Nelson represents the Bennington-1 district. He is a member of the House Committee on Education, where he continues to advocate for the needs and interests of his constituents.

Nelson Brownell’s commitment to public service and his community has made him a respected and influential figure in Vermont. His contributions have had a lasting impact on the town of Pownal and the state as a whole.
