Seth B. Bongartz was born and raised in Manchester, Vermont. He developed a strong connection to his community from an early age, which later influenced his career in public service. Bongartz pursued higher education with a focus on law, earning his degree and subsequently practicing as an attorney for eleven years.

Bongartz’s political career began in the early 1980s when he was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. He served from 1981 to 1985, representing the Bennington-4 district. His dedication and commitment to his constituents were evident during his tenure.

In 1987, Bongartz transitioned to the Vermont Senate, where he served until 1989. His time in the Senate was marked by his focus on legislative issues that impacted his community and the state at large. He chose not to seek re-election in 1989 due to the impending birth of his child, prioritizing his family during this period.

After a hiatus from politics, Bongartz returned to the Vermont House of Representatives in 2020. His re-election marked his third stint in the legislature, demonstrating his enduring commitment to public service. He currently represents the Bennington-4 district and serves on the House Committee on Natural Resources, Fish, and Wildlife, as well as the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR).

Beyond his political endeavors, Bongartz has had a distinguished professional career. He served as the President of Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home in Manchester, for 18 years. Under his leadership, Hildene transformed from a house museum into a 412-acre, world-class cultural heritage site. His tenure at Hildene is a testament to his vision and dedication to preserving cultural heritage.

Bongartz has been deeply involved in various community initiatives. He served on the board of Burr and Burton Academy for 19 years, with 15 of those years as Chair. He is also a founder and current Chair of the Manchester Community Land Trust, reflecting his commitment to affordable housing and community development.

Additionally, Bongartz is a principal in the consulting firm of Gubb & Bongartz, which focuses on helping Vermont non-profits reach their full potential. His work with non-profits underscores his dedication to fostering economic opportunity and community growth.
