Senator Marko Liias
Marko Sakari Liias is a lifelong Washingtonian born and raised in the neighborhoods he now serves. He represents the communities of the 21st Legislative District, which includes neighborhoods in Edmonds, Everett, Lynnwood, and Mukilteo.
Marko was appointed to the House of Representatives in 2008 and won re-election three times. In 2014, he was appointed to the Washington State Senate, where he is currently serving his third term. Throughout his legislative career, Marko has championed policies to improve public transportation access, enhance educational opportunities for students, create a safer and more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ youth, and build an economy that benefits everyone.
As the chair of the Senate Transportation Committee, Marko played a pivotal role in advancing the 2022 Move Ahead Washington transportation package. This package will invest nearly $17 billion in transportation resources across the state over the next 16 years, while also creating quality, family-wage jobs. The package prioritizes sustainability by investing in electrification, active transportation, and expanded transit options to address the climate crisis.
Marko is also the Co-Chair of the LGBTQ Caucus, advocating for the protection of LGBTQ youth and communities. He has sponsored bills to combat bullying, increase access to HIV medication, and ban so-called conversion therapy. In 2021, he championed the Gender Affirming Care Act, ensuring that trans and gender diverse Washingtonians can receive medically necessary treatment without discrimination from health insurers.
His commitment to education includes passing the Student Loan Bill of Rights, a college debt refinancing program, and a low-interest student loan program for undocumented students and Dreamers. Marko also pushed for equity, diversity, and inclusion in community and technical colleges through the Our Colleges, Our Future Act.
Beyond his legislative work, Marko serves as an adjunct college professor and the Communications Manager for the Snohomish County Office of Recovery and Resilience. His dedication to reducing gun violence led him to sponsor legislation limiting the sale of high-capacity magazines. Additionally, he championed the VOTE Act to empower younger voters.
Marko Liias continues to put people first, advocating for positive change in Washington State.
